Good Samaritan Hospital Hosts Sleep Symposium
Suffern, NY (PRWEB) June 3, 2007 -- Many Americans - and more than half of American women (60%) - say they only get a good night's sleep a few nights per week or less, while two thirds (67%) say they frequently experience a sleep problem, according to a poll released earlier this year by the nonprofit National Sleep Foundation. The Bon Secours Sleep Disorder Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital is committed to helping physicians and medical professionals recognize these issues and help people to improve sleeping habits, and will host a Sleep Symposium for physicians on Tuesday, June 5, 2007 from 2:30pm to 8:00pm at the Sheraton Crossroads in Mahwah, NJ.

A multitude of topics will be covered, aimed at educating physicians on how sleep disorders affect all patients, including a Keynote address by David M. Rappaport, M.D., who will discuss the cardiovascular effects of sleep disorder breathing. Additional topics will include helping women sleep better, as well as pre-op, peri-op, and post-op assessment of the sleep disorder patient.

Physicians can earn 4 CME credits by attending this symposium.

Good Samaritan Hospital opened its state-of-the-art Sleep Disorder Institute in 2002. It is the only facility of its kind west of the Hudson River to diagnose and treat the full spectrum of sleep disorders. The Institute, accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and headed by Dr. Jack Horng, Board Certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine, conducts comprehensive studies called Nocturnal Polysomnographs on patients experiencing sleep problems. The Sleep Disorder Institute has been designed to be a comfortable "homelike" setting with four beds. Data is digitally acquired and stored for the comprehensive studies to diagnose and treat the patient's sleep disorder.

According to Dr. Horng, "Diagnosing and treating sleep disorders is not that straightforward. It's a fluid, dynamic type of procedure that requires you know more about the patient. We hope this symposium enables physicians and other medical professionals to better understand sleep disorders, and to more successfully treat their patients as a result."

The June 5 Symposium will focus on supplying physicians with clinical information that will help them accurately recognize and diagnose sleep disorders in their patients. Keynote speaker, David M. Rappaport, M.D., will lecture on the cardiovascular effects of sleep disorder breathing, and other sleep disorder specialists will discuss how sleep disorders affect patients, how to help women sleep better, and pre-op, peri-op, and post-op assessment of the sleep disorder patient.

To reserve a spot for the lecture call the Sleep Disorder Institute at 845-368-5101.

Good Samaritan Hospital is part of the Bon Secours Charity Health System, which also includes St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick, NY and Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY. Additionally, Bon Secours Charity Health System provides the services of a Certified Home Health Agency, two long-term care facilities, an assisted living and adult home facility and several other medical programs.
