Paid to Read (PTR) scams operate by targeting home workers and those on low incomes, enticing them by offering cash rewards to join what appears to be legitimate opportunities. The operators of such schemes aggressively recruit these individuals to view and click ads sent to them via e-mail. Evidence acquired by Clickrisk researchers suggests individuals recruited for the PTR scams often go unpaid, although some pay outs appear to be made through the PayPal money service network.
"This is a particularly vicious and sinister scam that needs to be stopped. Advertisers and ad networks are not only being ripped-off, but unsuspecting members of the public are being increasingly drawn into click fraud scams," says Adam Sculthorpe, President & Chief Security Officer of Clickrisk. "We have seen a decline in click fraud from foreign countries such as China, Turkey and India demonstrating ad networks have incorporated some important changes to filtering over the past few months. At the same time the perpetrators have become more creative in finding new ways to game the system," adds Sculthorpe.
